Lavender is one of the mainstays of aromatherapy. Lavender has great value as an aid to relaxation and sleep. Studies have shown that after the inhalation of lavender, the left and right brain waves come into balance.
During Roman times, flowers were sold for 100 denarii per pound, which was nearly a month’s wages for a farm laborer, or the equivalent of fifty haircuts from the local barber. The Greeks discovered early on that lavender, if crushed and treated correctly, would release a relaxing fume when burned.
In folklore, pillows were filled with lavender flowers to help restless people fall sleep. Scientific evidence suggests that aromatherapy with lavender may indeed slow the activity of the nervous system, improve sleep quality, promote relaxation, and lift mood in those suffering from sleep disorders.
